Why Gold Vermeil Jewellery is your New BFF

Posted by remedios holwick on

Calling all golden girls. We may love the look and feel of real gold jewellery, but when we’re not quite ready to put down an investment on heirloom pieces that cost more than a month’s rent at our London flat, what’s a girl to do?

Enter gold vermeil. Vermeil (pronounced Ver-Mill or Ver-May), isn’t a new idea. In fact, gold vermeil jewellery has been in circulation as early as the 18th century when goldsmiths in France would utilise the technique in creating large objects from gold. Vermeil has been famously featured in the creation of the Olympic Gold medals as well as the crown jewels, all the way to those gold hoop earrings you can't stop wearing.

So what exactly is gold vermeil? It’s the technique of electroplating sterling silver with a thick layer of solid gold, making this a large step up from typical gold plating, which is often thin and cast over thinner metals such as alloy or brass. This demi-fine quality of jewellery is considered the highest in category before moving to fine aka solid gold.

What makes gold vermeil your new gold standard?

Is Gold Vermeil Durable?

Unlike thin gold plating, gold vermeil requires a coating of gold that is 2.5 microns thick, and a quality of at least 10k. Super strong sterling silver won’t bend or fall out of shape with repeat wear making these pieces durable enough to keep with you through all occasions of life, for they’ll wear like fine jewellery.

Is Gold Vermeil Good for my Sensitive Skin?

For skin sensitivities, we turn to gold and sterling silver. Put them together, and you have a naturally hypoallergenic duo that feels as good as it looks. Bye bye redness and hello gorgeous.

Does Gold Vermeil Look Like Gold?

What’s the difference between vermeil and solid gold? Upon close inspection, not too much. The thick layer of gold that vermeil boasts gives us all the warm glowy goodness we get from the solid stuff. It takes a jeweller to spot the minute differences. That said, go on– tell them it’s gold. After all, it is.

Is Gold Vermeil More Affordable Than Solid Gold?

Gold within reach? Yes please. Sterling silver is not only a premium material, it’s also easy on the pocketbook. Coat it with gold and you have an item that is good enough to last, without creating too big a dent in your bankroll.
